Engineering
Back-End Engineer (PHP)
New York

Are you an experienced PHP developer who loves the prospect of building game-changing tools for educators and students? If so, DeansList is the place for you. Back-end developers are a critical part of our small but mighty engineering team, one that's constantly releasing new features while building scalable code written to last the long haul. You'll work directly with our Director of Technology and CEO and interact heavily with our School Success and Data teams to ensure everything we build is meeting a diverse range of client needs. You'll also communicate directly with school administrators and teachers, respond to their needs, and often co-develop new features. Many of our clients are extremely tech-savvy and, in addition to educators, you'll support the data directors and programmers who interface with our APIs (REST and GraphQL) and build their own reports in our online development studio.

Day-to-day tasks vary, and include:

  • Architecting and building major new features
  • Making existing features better
  • Responding to engineering tickets and evaluating feature requests
  • Working with third-party systems (client and upstream/downstream providers)

Great candidates should have:

  • advanced experience with object-oriented PHP and share our passion for clean, scalable code
  • a track record of designing data-driven applications from end-to-end (database to user interface)
  • strong command of the front-end web stack (HTML, CSS and JavaScript)
  • experience interfacing with a variety of APIs (even those w/ poor documentation)
  • experience with relational and key-value store databases
  • the ability to multi-task and work on several projects at the same time
  • excellent skills (and a love for) working with end-users – this means being able to translate a user’s (a teacher or school administrator) requests into smart feature development plans

  • You think JavaScript is the bees knees and React/React Native is the best thing since sliced bread
Or maybe you can convince us why they're not!

  • Start taking on small web/mobile projects
  • Take ownership over key features/interfaces, and respond to related tickets
  • Begin pushing DeansList to the next level: We have big projects on the horizon, but we're waiting for your input and skills to have that conversation.
